Day of the Dead in Mexico
El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), is a day to celebrate, is a Mexican celebration, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. It is said that the spirits of babies and children who have died arrive on October 31st at midnight, spend an entire day with their families and then leave. Adults come the following day. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado, flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons ad skulls), and parades.
Gigantic sugar skulls are made from 50 year old molds for the competition at the Feria de Alfinique in Metepec, Mexico. These sugar skull makers have been making artisanal sugar for generations.
